There are the individual pieces of Balmain's spring 2011 offering that I know will be successful. The leather capri pants will be in hot demand and we'll undoubtedly cover them in many a street style photo. The silver tones throughout the collection will be perfectly on trend once the season arrives. And certain takes on short-shorts are so hacked up that they're sure to inspire a thousand 'interpretations'. All this I know. And yet, I loathe to say, something is amiss. All the looks feel a bit done, a little bit like what we're used to. Certainly, the quality will be there. But this is Balmain under Christophe Decarnin - I've come to expect more. I've come to expect a label able to take the season's key trends, fused them into a sole collection, and then take it to a stratospheric level. I've come to expect a label that can keep a tend going simply though excellent, extravagant design. I've come to expect a label with its finger on the pulse. Alas, punk is neither on trend nor extravagant, and what Balmain has brought to it all feels a little bit too done and dusted for 2011.

The September issues are starting to roll around, and with them those deemed important enough to grace their covers. Vogue UK went for the steadfast yet somehow rather safe option of Kate Moss. Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier and wearing little but one of Burberry Prorsum's fabulous military coats, we do note that Kate isn't promoted as being a model for the issue but rather as a stylist.

Military fashion as a trend is nothing new, in fact trend appeared in 2008. But while fashion trends tend to burn out within a few years, the women's military fashion trend isn't going anywhere, though like all true fashion trends, in 2010 the military trend will evolve. Gone (but not quite) are the decadent lashings inspired by military uniforms of the Georgian and Victorian eras. Rather, military is now about functionality and utility. If the 18th and 19th centuries originally inspired women's military fashion, then it's true to say that in 2010 it's inspired by the military uniforms of the 20th century.

There aren't all that many fashion accessories for men when one considers the sheer volume that exist for women. And of those that do exist, quite often you find that they're heavily associated with a sub-culture or movement that you're simply not interested in associating yourself with. Brooches for men are, however, one of the few men's accessories which can cross the sub-culture divides, are perfect for both Spring/Summer and Autumn (Fall)/Winter seasons, and are slowly making a come-back.
The Styles
As if taking their cues from the Cool Britannia revival, the most popular of men's brooches take their cues from vintage Anglo-Saxon, English and Scottish brooches, and old-world motifs such as stag heads. I like it, really! I think I have to get one of them for me ;)

If you're skeptical it's time to start looking on the bright side - socks are cheap, won't take up lots of space in your wardrobe, and are wholly practical. And while ankle socks with sandals may be a big trend currently, we're here to tell you they'll also be perfect for indulging in Fall 2010/11 fashion trends.

How to wear it: socks and shoes

Having socks bunched up at the ankles can appear to shorten one's legs. It'll come as no surprise to you that this looks best on longer legs and those with defined ankles.
There are, of course, ways around that conundrum for those not blessed with models' legs: try mid-calf versions, finer fabrics that don't bunch too much, or very low-sitting ankle socks that just show a peep above your shoes.

Styling ideas: socks and shoes

Use a pair of socks to add a pop of colour to an outfit. The same goes for patterns.
Bring a pair of brown leather sandals or wedges into the now by slipping on a pair of grey socks underneath. As a general rule pair marl grey with lighter browns and tans, and charcoal grey with dark and chocolate browns.
Remember those little sparkly ankle socks Dior sent down the runway for Spring? No reason those can't work in the cold weather - especially for hitting the town come night time.
Try your socks over the bottom of pants, a la Rag & Bone. Stick to sophisticated casual though - pants should be slim cut or tapered at the ankles, not too baggy.
Experiment with different colours. Cosy wool knit socks in earthy tones, cream or forest green are so perfect for creating a country 'I'm just heading out for a spot of hunting' look. On the other hand delicate pastels can have a subtle, feminine feel. Simple black, grey or white can be perfect for sleek, sophisticated minimalism.

Classic: for a classic or elegant take on the over-the-knee boot, your best bet is to go for a slim-fitting suede pair with a round or tapered toe. Look no further than Hermes or Isabel Marant for some perfect examples of styles that will stand the test of time.

Rock: the right pair of tight black leather over-the-knee boots screams rock-chic; tough, but sexy. Check out Ohne Titel, Yigal Azrouel, Barbara Bui (Poland) and Jean Paul Gaultier for some key examples.
Futurism/Cyberpunk: building upon the cyberpunk influences of recent years, some designers have thrown an element of dark futurism into the thigh-high boot mix. Particularly evident in the wound-and-bound effects of boots by Rodarte and Topshop Unique, this is a trend I expect we'll see more of in coming seasons.
Quirky: if none of the above is quite bold enough for you, and you really want to stand out this winter, there have been many other less subtle takes on this trend to hit the runway. Louis Vuitton introduced metallics and top-to-toe laces, while Hussein Chalayan's garter-topped thigh-highs are nothing short of brazen. Do be warned though; if long-term wearability is what you're after then this is probably not the road to go down.

Mario Testino has had his lens trained on supermodel legend Kate Moss since close to the very beginning of her career. As such it would come as no surprise that the famed photographer would have accumulated a huge library of photos of Kate over the years, ranging from the very start when he captured shots of her backstage at runways, all the way through to her career as the legendary print model she has become.

Now Testino is releasing a very limited edition photo book titled (slightly unimaginatively) Kate Moss by Mario Testino. Don't let the simple name fool you: the book features a stunning range of photographs of Moss taken over the course of her career, many of which have not been published before. The book also comes with an introduction from Kate in which she notes:

"Mario took me to a new level of glamour. I don't think anybody had seen me as any kind of sexy model before he did. He was the one that transformed me. Before him I was just a grungy girl, but he saw me differently. He was the first to say 'Oh, she's quite sexy. I've seen her out! I know she's not just that grungy girl.' He'd seen me in a pair of heels, getting glamorous - and he was the first to start taking pictures of me in that way. He changed the way people thought about me as a model, for sure. givenchy's couture perfection fall 2010

Utterly angelic yet devilishly ornate. For Fall 2010 Givenchy's Couture gowns were fringed, feathered, beaded, laced, jewelled, and appliqued. But at no time did they even tiptoe over the line between extravagance and exorbitance. Each piece was a careful patchwork of sheer perfection, and still Riccardo Tisci's penchant for dabbling in darkness gave a rough edge to the ethereal beauty of the gowns.

Pay careful attention: a motif of bones trickles through the collection in skeletal shapes. We've no doubt this work of Tisci's will bring the theme of subtle Gothic undertones back into strong influence.
I can't get over how gorgeous the detailing in this whole collection is.

Alberta Ferretti has launched a much requested bridal collection which includes 14 confections from short to long, soft to structured, romantic to richly bohemian. Her collection was shown at the Ritz Hotel on Monday.
Expect all of Ferretti's signature elegance; there are column dresses, guaranteed to glide elegantly over curves. Ferretti's attention to detail comes across in the way the soft silks and chiffons are draped, gathered and finished here with a bow, there with a flurry of ostrich feathers. And it's not only floor-skimming white gowns; there's also Feretti's take on a white, wide-legged wedding trouser and two mini-dresses for good measure. Delicate cover-ups are more than just a useful accessory, they're turned into features themselves; our favourite is a wispy, chiffon-sleeved shrug.

Ferretti says of the collection "With this new line dedicated to the Bride, I wanted to interpret, according to my concept of fashion, that special moment that is still the most important day for a woman."

Have a look on Swedish designer Lamija Suljevic's new Fall/Winter 2010 collection. She's a fashion designer born in Bosnia but based in Stockholm (Sweden). You can see she's trained in pattern making, the collection looks very tailored and has beautiful shapes. Her main inspiration for the collection was her hometown, her past & her lost childhood. "It's important to me that my garments are something more than just a garment on a hanger.They should tell a story." Isn't that true & inspiring?

We all know Karl Lagerfeld likes to travel to show his resort & prefall collections for Chanel. The prefall collection was shown in Shanghai, last year's resort colection was in Venice, this year, Saint Tropez was the place to be. Models arrived via speedboat (how appropriate) & walked the runway right next to the port. The collection felt very seventies to me and I can't deny I'm a tad relieved designers are getting over the 80s trend. Enough is enough, right? But let's look at some pictures above.
Karl Lagerfeld made a short movie to set the tone for his collection, watch it if you haven't seen it already, it's quite entertaining. I love Chanel but there's people dancing at a club and....? Kind of random and makes no sense even for a short film.

If you'd make me, I'd probably end up like this. Ok maybe not this bad. This is from an editorial (Paris Vogue june '10), model is Iselin Steiro, Photographed by Tyen, styled by Emmanuelle Alt, Make up by Tyen & Kim. Thanks to Diorette for the VERY high quality scans. So I was rummaging through my archives today because I was putting together an album with all the photographers I've featured on here for the Yes Please Mademoiselle Facebook page, and doing a little more research on Irving Penn's pictures, I suddenly came across this picture. Guess I found where the idea came from... And yes, I am disappointed to know that the idea of Paris Vogue wasn't originally theirs but just a picture from Irving Penn from 1969, actually an advertisement he made for L'Oréal. What say you?

My summer wardrobe is lacking something very important: a good pair of fashionable sunglasses. For some mysterious reason sunglass trends change dramatically every year, and what you so proudly wore last year is bound to get you some not-very-kind comments on the gayest areas of the city. For some even more mysterious reason I happen to live in an area of Paris which is invaded by chic optical boutiques. So lately I've been looking for the perfect pair in each one of them with not much success: there is too much choice to be able to distiguish and I don't want to risk picking a pair and then seeing a better one in the shop which is 5 metres away. Finally I desperately decided to turn to la crème de la crème de la super crème of the sunglasses and I visited Linda Farrow's online shop. And the first thing I saw on the site was this:

GaGatastic, aren't they? These sunglasses were made by Linda Farrow in collaboration with Jeremy Scott and they are a Gaga classic: she wore them in Paparazzi with the sole purpose of killing her boyfriend...

...And a while after she lent them to Beyoncé, who had the intention of killing her own boyfriend in Telephone. The conclusion is an easy one: killer sunglasses! And yeah, you can still buy them on Linda Farrow's website.

But we all know these are not the only glasses Gaga has been seen wearing. She actually seems to be addicted to sunglasses of every style, colour and shape. You name it, she's worn it: aviators, oversized sunglasses, black sunglasses, pink sunglasses, Alexander Wang (also by Linda Farrow) sunglasses, aerodynamic sunglasses, cigarette butt-covered sunglasses... But there is one particular trend which probably wouldn't be so "en vogue" right now if it wasn't for her: round, 1930's-inspired sunglasses. Before Gaga, if you were spotted wearing one of those pairs of glasses, the best remark people could do was something like "are you a hippy, or trying to emulate John Lennon or something?" (the worst being simply "Freaaaak!"). But now, thank God and thank Gaga, they are considered glamurous and contemporary.

But where did Gaga draw her inspiration from? 1930's Hollywood divas, who else? for instance:

I thought I had finally found mine when I saw these Dries van Noten by Farrow, but they are not on sale anymore! And speaking of exotic sunglasses, you won't find any funnier, cuter, lovelier glasses than these House of Holland by Linda Farrow ones. They can spice up any look and they are not expensive. Perfect if you want to make a difference this summer! All in all, I must confess I still haven't quite decided which sunglasses to choose... But Linda Farrow's ones are certainly an option: they are original, chic, one-of-a kind sunglasses that last for a lifetime!

The first, best defined by Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, is for a celebration of womanliness that will allow us to use traditional wiles and graceful curves to catch the eye of the objects of our affection - and all their friends. The motto? If you haven't got it, fake it - not (thankfully), in the silicone sense, but with extra fabric bullet pleated for greater bust potential, or bottoms given the same treatment by full skirts caught into soft bustles across the back. The second is for absolute, supreme, take-your-breath-away quality, the like of which has possibly only previously been witnessed on the haute couture catwalks. It can be simply done - Phoebe Philo set a benchmark with her spring/summer 2010 show last season for considered, refined shapes that was taken as a cue by several of her contemporaries and deliciously investigated by her again on the Celine catwalk for autumn/winter. Simple but not clinical, since the fabrics are luxurious to the point of genius - embellished with jewels or fur, threaded with rich embroidery, pleated and draped and with different textures spun together as if by magic, it is paired down in shape but whipped up high in value. Your shopping list for autumn/winter 2010-11? Start saving for a camel coat - MaxMara and Chloe's were bank-breakingly lovely - but if you can't do camel then look in surprising places for your statement cover up. Alberta Ferretti was apparently inspired by this winter's snow to broaden her offering to include coats - and they were beautifully ornate, definitely a worthy investment (it's about the love of your life, remember?). The handbag? Big or small, it wants to be carried by a short strap, in your hand or hooked over the forearm - and, in place of colour and tassel or quilting and noise, it is simply of the highest possible quality. Think of a man's briefcase, give it softer curves (and put more in it), and stamp it subtly with a classic logo: Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, YSL and Moschino have all recalled their original trademarks. Texture is key - patchwork your wardrobe with it: bulgy teddy bear fur (or any incarnation of it, real or fake), mixed with sheepskin and suede. Knits come in every density - and look best worn in the same colour from neck to knee and narrowly belted in skinny leather. And the colour palette? Warmly autumnal but mixed together in a new way - pair petrol blue with warm brown, or wear navy (which was everywhere and very very dark, the closest to black it can be), with a flash of fiery orange - or add a dash of leopard print to anything to ensure absolute seasonal definition. Skirts are mini and wrap around or long long long. And shoes? Anja Rubik and Sasha Knezevic celebrated their new new look take on Austrian magazine 25 — the official launch issue features Constance Jablonski, Karlie Kloss, and Abbey Lee Kershaw on three separate covers, all styled by Barbara Martelo and photographed by Marcin Tyszka. Sal Morale DJed the fete in an old Paris apartment, where fellow featured subjects like Heidi Mount, Karlie Kloss, Alana Zimmer, and Kasia Struss joined him. The issue boasts an abundance of couture “It is rare to get so many couture clothes in a magazine," Anja Rubik told — and comes in a limited-edition English version (2,000 copies) and a larger print run in German (50,000 copies). “It’s an Austrian magazine so it was important to keep a link between the first issue and Austria,” said Anja, explaining fashion editorials inspired by artists Egon Schiele (photographed by Victor Demarchelier) and Gustav Klimt (featuring Eniko Mihalik). Knezevic and Rubik are already hard at work on their next issue of the quarterly magazine; noted the latter: “One of our contributors will be Julia Restoin-Roitfeld." When?When? Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members. Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. Leader André Breton was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was above all a revolutionary movement. Surrealism developed out of the Dada activities of World War I and the most important center of the movement was Paris. From the 1920s on, the movement spread around the globe, eventually affecting the visual arts, literature, film, and music of many countries and languages, as well as political thought and practice, philosophy and social theory. So! I'm going to take some idea's from Surrealism at the next session..... We'll see.

Is Haute Couture dead? Each season, this eternal question looks actually less like a question and more like a fact. The truth is the French industry has a big problem here, and not just because couture is something that only 2000 persons in the whole planet can afford, but for the struggle of an obsolete way of working to adapt itself to the XXIst century. Don't misunderstand me: I adore haute couture, and I think the work of people like Lesage, Lemarié and all the other artisans that work for couture should remain a reference for the luxury market, (so thanks Kaiser Karl for financing the artisans) but I also think the balance between tradition and modernity is difficult to achieve. And so we find ourselves with two new trends when it comes to couture: there's the self-proclaimed "modern" or "avant-garde" couture, which is trying to be minimal and arty, although it's actually a bit like Nouvelle Cuisine, clichéd and out of fashion. On the other side, we find all these designs that seem to have been thought for "Barbie Princess of a Fairy Tale" (although they are really meant for opulent Dubai princesses and cheesy red carpet fairy tales- yes, I'm talking about Elie Saab and some such abominations). Meanwhile, some of the most elegant and most representative houses have been forced to stop producing couture (Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino and Christian Lacroix), and some other houses survive, still working in excellence and continuing the European tradition. And very few new designers have the talent to keep up with that (among them, I am proud to say, Italian genius Maurizio Galante, for whom I interned for almost a year and who taught me a lot about fashion. A post about him is on its way). So...what to do? I guess the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture is managing the issue the best they can... Otherwise all we can do is hope for new geniuses to take over and for Karl to never die. Meanwhile, let's enjoy what is left of True Haute Couture.

Frida Kahlo was an incredibly amazing woman. Her life was filled with physical as well as emotional pain. She endured more in her short life than most people will ever have to face. But she endured. She put her emotions into her painting, and as it were, she wore her heart on her canvas. Her work is a rare blend of true emotion, heartbreak, love, and life, as well as death. Most of her paintings were self-portraits. She said, "I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best. I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other considerations." Her paintings, like Tori Amos's music, are very open and honest. They reflect her emotions, the events in her life, changes in her feelings - whether good or bad. She recorded her life in paint. Her imagery and style were very original, dramatic, and courageous. Her husband, the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, said: "Frida is the only example in the history of art of an artist who tore open her chest and heart to reveal the biological truth of her feelings. The only woman who has expressed in her work an art of the feelings, functions, and creative power of woman." I realy like her style very much. She is inspiration for me at the next photographs. The new Chanel Rouge Coco collection will be launching in March and will be replacing their hydrabase collection they have now. Each lipstick will be retailed about £67 each. The face of Coco Rouge is Vanessa Paradis a great choice in my opinion (though I am extremely jealous of her snagging Johnny Depp..le sigh). The 30 shades will be inspired by Coco Chanel's life (so darling!) with names like Mademoiselle, Camelia and Paris. I myself am a lipstick-lover, I rarely wear lipgloss. There is something so classy.. so Parisienne when you wear and put on lipstick. What will you choose, when you’re only allow to do ONE part of make-up? I’m assume most of you will choose mascara. But She – Coco Chanel thinks that lipstick should not be missed in daily wear. That explains why the lipstick holder is designed in the precious Chanel 2.55. “Chanel lipstick is now completely redesigned and improved” said Peter Philips, the creative director of Chanel Make-up . In the term of the pigmentation, the development of new technology and ingredients will always move forward to get a better quality of lipstick. The classic plastic casing will be replaced with a chic metal material. The Coco Rouge will be appeared in the market March 2010. And Venessa Paradis will be the face of the range. Chanel hopes that with the release of the Coco Rouge will bring back the generation mass to the classic lipstick world, while most of the ladies gone so crazy in love with lip-gloss.

Together, Sasha and Anja began work on the already-established Viennese magazine in November of last year, infusing the December 2009 issue (cover left) with a taste of what's to come: a complete overhaul. It all came about, according to Sasha, "because a friend of mine bought 25 and asked me to help him out. I convinced Anja to do the fashion part and before we realized, we had our own magazine." With Sasha as the magazine's new joint editor-in-chief and creative director (Anja's acting as fashion/art director), they're bringing in completely new editorial teams — one in New York, one in Vienna — and switching the former monthly magazine into a quarterly fashion and lifestyle book. The full effect of their labors will be on display when the Spring 2010 issue comes out in February. In between tales of how Anja took him to see Avatar in Poland over the holidays ("I thought it would be cheesy, but it turned out pretty good"), Sasha hinted at the upcoming issue. They've already lined up Victor Demarchelier to capture Heidi Mount in an Egon Schiele-inspired editorial; the goal is to have six editorials total, five women's fashion-focused with one men's fashion spread for good measure. And Anja's been typing away at articles on flights between modeling jobs — content will span everything from art and film to travel and food. Unfortunately the magazine is only available in Vienna for now, but top priority for Sasha is to make the magazine available more internationally — in the meantime, it will be available for purchase on 25magazine.com, with an English translation in the back of the book. I hope this going to be Good and will be interesting to follow :)I'm waiting so much....

I just come back from Dubei. I went there about three weeks ago, whcih means I changed me. And I LOVED every minute of it! No Facebook, no internet, in fact no computer and no telephone. Just fish, cornfields and little trips. I changed my heels for flipflops or bare feet and all my complicated outfits, makeup and hairdos for the simplest dresses, a healthy tan and beach hair. It is so refreshing to sometimes forget about fashion, what's fashionable, what's in, what's out, what's new, what's a must, what's modern, what's post-modern, what's the next best thing. Hearing peasants talking about their cows or their fruit trees seems to make so much more sense than hearing fashionable girls complaining about not having yet the latest Chanel bag. Being out of "civilisation" I actually wondered what does "civilised" mean. Sitting in the middle of a deserted beach. I wished fashion was a little more human a little less pointless sometimes. So I'm back in Manchester. The only difference is I have a much more clear and refreshed mind, and... I still refuse to torture myself by wearing heels again!
